Meet Kevin

Senator Kevin Thomas proudly represents New York’s 6th Senate District in Nassau County. As a former attorney with the New York Legal Assistance Group, Kevin has dedicated his life to serving his community and defending average New Yorkers. Elected into the State Senate in 2018, Kevin is the first Indian-American to serve in the New York State Legislature. Kevin serves as Chair of the Consumer Protection Committee and sits on the Judiciary, Finance, Banking, Aging, Veterans, Homeland Security, and Military Affairs Committees.

Kevin is standing up for Long Island in the State Senate. He helped secure record school aid for Nassau County and made the property tax cap permanent, which will save taxpayers nearly $190 billion over the next decade. Kevin also delivered new funding for our infrastructure, groundbreaking protections for our environment, relief for our student loan borrowers, and progressive voting reforms.

Prior to his election, Kevin was appointee of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and an attorney with the nonprofit New York Legal Assistance Group, where he defended clients who had been unfairly targeted by large lenders. After years of helping those in financial crisis, Kevin chose to run for the State Senate to continue fighting to protect the rights of the people.

Kevin grew up in Queens and received his J.D. from Western Michigan University Cooley Law School. He lives in Levittown with his wife, Rincy, daughter, Layla, and dog, Sirius.

We need strong leadership to represent Nassau County.

Holding Down Property Taxes

Nassau County residents pay some of the highest tax rates in the country, which keeps young families from moving in and forces older residents to move out. By voting to make the 2% property tax cap permanent, Kevin’s helping property taxpayers save almost $190 billion over the next decade.

Cleaning Up the Northrop Grumman Plume

Kevin supported the plan to build a $585 million treatment system to halt the further spread of contaminants and protect our public drinking water. Our communities depend on clean, quality drinking water and the Northrop Grumman Plume is an ongoing threat to our public wells. This is a top-priority issue affecting over 250,000 Nassau County residents.

Passing the Child Victims Act

For far too long, brave men and women who have sought justice have been denied their rightful opportunity to confront their attackers in court. Kevin took part in delivering justice to survivors by voting to pass the Child Victims Act, which extended the statute of limitations for child sexual abuse crimes, allowing survivors to seek the justice they deserve.

Preventing Gun Violence

The infliction of gun violence in communities across America is a tragedy and we must protect our children and schools with common-sense gun legislation. Kevin voted to pass the Red Flag Bill – preventing individuals who show signs of being a threat from possessing any kind of firearm – to make our communities safer.

Securing School Funding

With a young daughter, Kevin understands the importance of education for our children’s future. In his first year in the Senate, Kevin brought home almost $600 million in funding for our schools, an increase of $30 million over 2018. Kevin will make sure Nassau County schools get their fair share.

Making College More Affordable

Before becoming Senator, Kevin helped arrange free representation for defendants who were sued for student loans. Now with Kevin as our Senator, all student loan servicers are required to be licensed by the Department of Financial Services. To build on that success, Kevin introduced legislation that will freeze SUNY and CUNY tuition and help close the TAP Gap for good.

Protecting Data Privacy

Consumers should have the right to know how their personal information is being used and not have their personal data compromised. To enhance data breach protections following the Equifax settlement, Kevin’s Stop Hacks and Improve Electronic Data Security (SHIELD) Act was signed into law. Kevin is currently carrying the NY Privacy Act which holds social media platforms accountable to protect the personal information of individuals.

Fighting the Opioid Epidemic

Too many families on Long Island and throughout New York have suffered from the devastating consequences of the opioid epidemic. Kevin has secured over $25 million to address the heroin and opioid crisis on Long Island. In the district, Kevin sponsored free naloxone training in partnership with the Nassau County Department of Human Services to teach residents how to administer lifesaving overdose reversal, and give information on treatment and recovery options.

Protecting Our Kids From Vaping

E-liquids are a hazardous product, and with the rising popularity of vaping among minors, our children have become the test subjects. The products are often obtained through unregulated vendors, can be refilled with unknown substances that could increase their potential for harm to the user. Kevin introduced legislation to prohibit the sale of certain refillable e-liquid products off the shelves and save lives.

Making Voting Easier

Democracy only works when it is accessible to everyone. Kevin voted to pass a series of bills to establish early voting and no-excuse absentee voting, modernize and expand voter registration, impose limits on LLC contributions, extend Primary Election voting hours and ensure uniformity throughout the state.
